The 5th grade students are exploring the medium of modeling clay to create bas relief tiles. Working with composition, point of view and use of space the students composed some wonderful leaf images. We are now ready to add modeling clay to create the raised up surface of the bas relief. Check back later to see the finished pieces.

Trading cards are just about finish and students are getting ready to participate in the class "trading swap" Students are being taught how the free market works in the world of art and how supply and demand are critical components of the art making process. This is always a lively and educational day for them...the students always want to make more cards afterwards so they can have more to trade!
The 5th grade students have begun their unit on Artist Trading Cards. They are creating a series of cards that relate to a theme that they choose. The art room has become "their studio" and they are exploring all sorts of mediums as they create these cards. In a few weeks will hold a "swap meet" and students will learn about the free market as it relates to the art world!
What are artist trading cards? Artist trading cards (ATCs) are miniature pieces of art that are traded around the world. Artists create, trade and collect art at organized “swap” events, either in person or online. The only official rule for ATCs is the size: 2.5" x 3.5". How did the movement start? In 1997, M. Vanci Stirnemann, a Swiss artist, created 1200 cards by hand as part of an exhibit. On the last day, he invited others to create their own cards and trade with him during the closing reception. The movement took off, and today, there are ATC swaps in almost every major city around the world. The 5th grade students have begun their unit on the glass artist Dale Patrick Chihuly. We viewed his installation work in Venice entitled "Chihuly Over Venice... River of Glass." The students were amazed to see the process of glass blowing and they could not understand why we could not try it in our own art room! We are going to be creating a "faux" glass piece using plastic. The concept of abstraction will be taught in this unit Students are "in the creative flow" as they manipulate various materials and create their set of Artist Trading Cards. They have explored the world of color and are learning to use the following palettes: Contrasting, Analogous , Warm and Cool. The 5th grade students have begun their unit on Artist Trading Cards. We chose our favorite Zentangle and engraved it onto a metal plate. We then worked with various embossing tools to add a focal point and more visual interest to our piece. When we flipped the metal plate over we had created an embossed piece! Adding a little "patina" to the metal made our designs really stand out...I think they are very proud of these! The fifth graders have been learning the art of Zentangles! What are Zentangles? Zentangles are an easy-to-learn, relaxing, and fun way to create beautiful images by drawing structured patterns. Zentangling improves focus and creativity and provides artistic satisfaction with an increased sense of personal well being. The 5th grade students have begun their unit on Artist Trading Cards
