The first graders are enjoying the art of collage. What could be better than cutting paper and using glue! They are working with pattern and mixed media to create a floral still life. Most of them plan to give these to a very special person on May 14th!

First graders are learning about the Post-Impressionist artist Paul Cezanne. We have studied his apple still-life paintings. Working with pattern and light source, the students are creating some awesome still-life apple paintings! Our Clay Snowmen have been fired and glazed and are finally ready to be put into the Starry Night Landscape. Students studied the artist Vincent van Gogh and learned how he painted with tiny brush strokes to make the sky and stars "move" and "twinkle" in the painting. Working with paint and oil pastels, the students created some amazing "Starry Nights" too!
The wonder of clay always fascinates first graders! They love to touch and smell it! We are learning where clay is found and how to join it together to made 3-D artwork. Using concepts of scoring, slipping and hand modeling students are creating some wonderful clay snowmen.
First graders have been learning about the Pop Art movement and how these artists painted everyday objects as their subject matter. We chose the alphabet as our everyday subject matter. Connecting the letters together was challenging and made our work look a little abstract much like the paintings of the artist Jasper Johns who we studied as well. Working with a variety of paint strokes added more interest to our pieces. First graders have been learning about how the artist can become a cartoonist. We worked with how to use line and shape to show emotion and created these funny pumpkin cartoons. This year the Art Department at Westgate is trying something new! We are hoping to increase printmaking materials in the art room. They are costly and to help cover those costs we are trying a couple of new ventures. One of the ventures is to offer Art keepsakes to the first and second graders. We are partnering with the company Square 1 Art who create some wonderful keepsakes from your children's artwork. You can visit their website at www.square1art.com. Students are currently creating the artwork that will be sent in to be made into keepsakes. The keepsakes can be ordered from the catalogs that will be sent home at a later date. All children will receive a complimentary sheet of stickers of their art work. Our hope is that parents will enjoy the opportunity to purchase some keepsakes of their child' s artwork and that the art department will be able to purchase the resources to enhance the printmaking unit at Westgate. These paintings will be submitted to the Square One Art company to be made into the various keepsakes. The first graders reviewed how to draw their portrait and then added an Expressive Style to their work. My Many Colored Days by Dr. Seuss has taught us that our days can be filled with a range of emotions. We learned that artists can express these emotions through their use of color. Students listed the various emotions they feel in a day and then assigned colors to their emotions. The results are quite stunning!
The wonderful story of a giraffe who faces his fears and learns how to dance has been the inspiration for the 1st graders story illustration painting. Students used geometric shapes that flowed together to create an organic shape of a giraffe dancing. Then working with mixing shades of the color blue the students created a night sky with a giant full moon. Concepts of foreground and background were reviewed and the process of collage will be used to assemble their artwork. Gerald has some pretty cool moves don't you think? |
