Kindergartners have been busy creating their end of the year Self-portraits. They are learning how Leonardo da Vinci used placement and proportion to create his most famous portrait... the Mona Lisa. We looked closely at our faces to discover various shapes and where they are placed. These self-portraits will be treasured for many years to come.

The month of October is filled with so much beauty to be inspired from...kindergartners chose a pumpkin patch for the subject matter in their landscape painting. They are learning how artists use overlapping, foreground and background in landscapes to show something in front of something else. They also have learned how artists mix colors to show light reflecting on objects....we painted the sunlight reflecting on our pumpkins in our "Pumpkin Patch Landscapes." We then used vertical and horizontal line patterns to add visual interest to our paintings. Check back to view the finished pieces! Kindergartners have been exploring the world of Texture. We looked at how adding texture to a drawing gives us more details and makes our drawings more interesting. Using texture rubbing plates we learned the difference between visual and tactile texture. Students are currently working on creating Spring Trees with texture.
The third element of art that we are currently learning about is Pattern. Students created another page to go into their "Art Books" which will be "published" and sent home at the end of the school year. We have studied the artist Jim Dine and are now creating a heart picture using our thumb prints. These pictures will be submitted to the Square One Art Keepsake Company just in time for Spring. More details about this fundraiser will follow.
Kindergartners have been learning about how an artist can be an illustrator of a book. We read the wonderful story by Ed Emberly called Go Away Big Green Monster and took note of how the artist used many different shapes. We learned that there are two families of shapes... geometric and organic. Working with paint and collage, we are creating our own Big Green Monster. Check back soon to see how they turn out!

We have explored the shapes in our face and learned how to use proper placement and proportion to draw ourselves in a realistic style. The Renaissance artist Leonardo da Vinci has been our resource for learning how to measure and align the features in our face. Looking in the mirror to draw ourselves was an experience we will remember always!
