Second graders have been learning about the wonderful Impressionist artists who painted a "moment in time". We learned how they went outside to paint and were very interested in capturing the sunlight on objects. They are painting a waterlily scene showing sunlight on their lilies. The foreground, middle ground and background areas help to establish space in their composition. They have learned to draw objects in the background much smaller to create the illusion of space.

Second graders have learned how to use line variety and overlapping to create some beautiful pen and ink landscapes. We worked with placement and proportion as we composed our drawings. Color blending and shading were also used to add a sense of three-dimensionality to our pictures...sometimes a simple drawing can become so beautiful!
Our penguin unit is met with much enthusiasm...we work with 2-D paper and then create penguin sculptures in clay!
First, the students worked with geometric and organic shapes to draw penguins in their sketchbooks. Next, we worked with collage and tore paper to create penguins sledding downhill. Finally, 3-D forms like spheres and cylinders are created with the clay and are formed into some wonderful penguins. Stay tuned for the results! The second graders learned about the folk art of Mexico and created some wonderful mirrors. We worked with radial symmetry and a warm color palette. Collage and opaque paint concepts were also learned in this fun project. The catalogs were sent home this week and orders are coming in.... WOW what a wonderful response we have had to the Square 1 fundraiser! I know the children loved getting a sticker sheet with their artwork...it was worth it just for that! Here are some of the students' finished Sunflower paintings that will be used on the keepsakes. Thank you for all your support of the art program. I am looking forward to purchasing some wonderful printmaking supplies!
This year the Art Department at Westgate is trying something new! We are hoping to increase printmaking materials in the art room. They are costly and to help cover those costs we are trying a couple of new ventures. One of the ventures is to offer Art keepsakes to the first and second graders. We are partnering with the company Square 1 Art who create some wonderful keepsakes from your children's artwork. You can visit their website at www.square1art.com. Students are currently creating the artwork that will be sent in to be made into keepsakes. The keepsakes can be ordered from the catalogs that will be sent home at a later date. All children will receive a complimentary sheet of stickers of their art work. Our hope is that parents will enjoy the opportunity to purchase some keepsakes of their child' s artwork and that the art department will be able to purchase the resources to enhance the printmaking unit at Westgate. Second graders have been hard at work creating the paintings that will be used for their Square 1 Art Keepsakes. We studied the Post-Impressionism artist Vincent van Gogh and learned about his life and artwork. He loved to paint still life, especially sunflowers! Using their observation skills students studied and drew a sunflower. We then worked with chalk pastel and paint to create some wonderful sunflower paintings. These are just spectacular! The second graders have been learning all about the artists of the Impressionism Period. We focused on Claude Monet and learned that he was interested in capturing a moment in time...he loved to capture the light on objects. We worked on showing deep space in our waterlilies paintings...they are a special "moment in time." The folk art of Mexico has been our inspiration for the radial mirror designs that the 2nd classes have been working to create. Students learned that a radial design is circular and symmetrical all around. We also worked with line variety to create visual interest in our artwork. Students transitioned from 2-D drawing to 3-D creating! Learning how to join clay by scoring and slipping and then hand building with the clay the penguins are fabulous! |
