Third grade students have been exploring the world of owls. We are using line variety to show visual texture and to add interest to our owl drawings. Our next step is to learn how to use the batik process. Students are very excited to see the finished piece. Check back soon for pictures!

The third graders have begun their unit on tropical fish. We are learning how to draw fish so that they appear 3-D. Working with light and shadows, students used ebony pencils to shade their drawings. Next we are moving into creating a 3-D fish with clay. Pattern and texture will be used to create visual interest to these clay sculptures.
The winter landscape is filled with beauty and has been our inspiration for our unit on landscape painting. Students worked with the concepts of foreground, middle ground and background to create space in their paintings. We began with watercolor techniques of wet in wet to create a dawn or dusk sky. Next, we added trees using a printing process with cardboard. Finally, using an impasto thick paint stroke, students added the winter snowfall....stay tuned for the results!
Third graders are learning about the Batik process of wax resist as they apply a thick coat of crayon color and paint over their owls with tempera. Once the owls have been finished we will be adding "words of wisdom" to the art piece. Students are to seek out some "very wise" people and bring in their written words of wisdom...quotes can also be brought in. These finished pieces will be on display throughout the building. Third graders have been busy learning about owls and learning how to draw them. We researched some interesting facts about this incredible bird of prey. Using placement, proportion and visual texture as we drew, students were able to create some awesome drawings of owls. We are also studying the art of Batik painting which is a wax resist process used in many cultures. Students will use wax crayons and paint to emulate the batik process. Students will gather "words of wisdom" which will be incorporated into this artwork. The art of "Zentangling" captivated the third graders as they created their 2-D fish painting. Zentangles are repetitive line patterns and designs which are used to add interest to drawings. The idea is to "lose" yourself in the drawing of the repeated line design to reach a state of "Zen." Not sure if any of us reached that but our paintings are very interesting none the less! Third graders are very excited about beginning their clay unit! They are learning how to work from a 2-D drawing to create a 3-D clay sculpture. The theme of ocean life has been their inspiration as they create various fish and aquatic life. Stay tuned for the finished products. Students have been fascinated learning about how to draw buildings in perspective. They are creating Chicago skylines and will be working in pen and ink medium. The concept and skill of showing value by using hatching and cross-hatching is being taught in this lesson. The beauty of fresh fallen snow at dawn and dusk has been our inspiration in painting these winter landscapes. Students are working with creating deep space in a composition. They are using foreground, middle ground and background images to give the illusion of space. We also worked with the color concept of mixing tints and shades of a color. Students we challenged and used their problem solving skills as they were given small pieces of cardboard to paint their trees....the results were amazing! |
