The 5th grade students have begun their unit on the glass artist Dale Patrick Chihuly. We viewed his installation work in Venice entitled "Chihuly Over Venice... River of Glass." The students were amazed to see the process of glass blowing and they could not understand why we could not try it in our own art room! We are going to be creating a "faux" glass piece using plastic. The concept of abstraction will be taught in this unit.
Students worked with a range of color values to add more depth to their optical illusions. Many of them said that looking at their work was making them dizzy!!! The world of Optical Illusions are always very fascinating to students. We began our study of this Art Movement and the 5th graders are learning how artist use line, shape and color to create illusions that fool our eyes. |
