The fourth graders have begun learning about one of the most famous movements in art history…the Renaissance! We studied the life and work of Michelangelo and took a virtual tour of the Sistine Chapel in Rome. Students are exploring the world of color and will diffuse the colors in the color wheel to make a rosette stained glass window. Check back soon to see how the look.

The fourth grade students are learning about how an artist uses various points of view in composing their artwork. The artist Georgia O'Keeffe has been our inspiration in creating these magnified orchid paintings. Students really enjoyed taking a "bumblebee's point of view" as they explored the beauty of a flower. We have begun our ever exciting Clay Unit! This year we will be making Coil Pots. Students have learned about the artist Maria Martinez who was a Native American potter from New Mexico. We learned how she uses a special firing process to create black pots from red clay. We will be working with a red clay body to create our own urns and vessels…check back to see the finished products! Now that winter is in full force...it is time for the fourth graders to begin their unit on weaving! This year we are creating circular weaving using old cds from the LMC. Students began by learning how to "warp" their "loom". We then used various colored "wefts" and wove using a standard weave pattern to create their woven piece. Fourth graders have been learning lots about the world of color! During our field trip to the Art Institute we viewed George Seurat's Sunday Afternoon of the Island of La Grande Jatte. He was a master in color and color blending. We are creating pointillism color blended designs for the 4th grade music concert backdrop. Students had lots of fun "posing" as the farmer and his daughter in the American Gothic painting. The fourth graders are studying the painting American Gothic by Grant Wood. They learned about the story behind this fascinating art work. Working with placement and proportion, they are drawing the painting and doing a fabulous job at it! We hope to view the original painting of the American Gothic when we visit the Art Institute next month. |
