Our clay unit has begun and students have learned how clay is formed and where it is found in the earth. May students have shared that they have found clay in their own backyards! We worked with spheres to hand build our snowmen. The concepts of scoring and slipping the clay were also introduced in this unit. Students are excited to glaze their snowmen..to make them shiny! We are currently studying the artwork of Vincent van Gogh and will be creating the "Snowy Starry Night" to house our snowmen...hopefully they will make it home in one piece!

The Lonely Scarecrow is a story about a scarecrow who would love to have the animals in the field become his friend. The animals are afraid of him and the scarecrow is lonely. Then a snow fall changes everything! The animals learn that you can't judge a person by their appearance and the scarecrow learns what friendship feels like. You can read the entire story which is posted alongside the 1st graders Lonely Scarecrows in the hallway...it will warm your heart! The artist Pablo Picasso has been our inspiration for our Cubism Scarecrows. We learned how he painted a face looking at it from both a profile and frontal view. Students are working with cutting, gluing and painting to create a collage of a scarecrow portrait. We also learned point of view as we read the book Scarecrow by Cynthia Rylant. The illustrations were just wonderful to see how a point of view can change from "bird's eye" to "bugs eye." First graders are learning about the Post-Impressionist artist Paul Cezanne. We have studied his apple still-life paintings. Working with pattern and light source, the students are creating some awesome still-life apples paintings! Check back soon to see the student's paintings! Students have been exploring the world of color and how artists use color to express emotion. Choosing four emotions, students created abstract paintings that also include pattern and line variety. The first graders and the multi-age students have been learning about the artist Leonardo da Vinci. He was not only an artist but he was also a mathematician, a scientist, and an inventor! We viewed the portrait of Mona Lisa and discussed how da Vinci worked in the style of realism. Students used guidelines and measurements like da Vinci to create their own self portraits. They also used proportion and placement in drawing their self-portraits. We then worked with color in an expressive manner. My Many Colored Days by Dr. Seuss gave us inspiration as we chose colors to express our wide range of emotions felt during the year. The first graders have been very excited and busy working in clay! We are creating a clay snowman in the "Starry Night" landscape scene. In addition to learning the skills needed to form the clay snowman, we have also learned where clay comes from and how glaze contains sand particles which melt in the kiln to make the clay piece shiny. Students were so very excited to bring these home…I hope they made it home in one piece! Our heart paintings are finished… just in time for our concert! They are just beautiful! The first graders are learning about the process of Printing and Stamping. We are creating Pointsettia Flower Still Life pictures. The Legend of the Pointsettia by Tomie de Paula was integrated into this lesson. |
