The fourth graders have been working with paper and paint to create 3-dimensional pumpkins. We explored warm colors and paint scrapers to create some wonderfully painted paper. Then we learned how to cut paper strips without scissors! These strips were joined and we manipulated the paper to form the pumpkin sculptures Lots of problem solving and thinking outside of the box during this process. The pumpkin sculptures are wonderful!

The fourth graders have been learning about the art of weaving. We are "being green" using old discarded cds to weave onto. Students learned how to "warp" their loom and then weave with "wefts" to create the basket weave design...they are becoming very good weavers! During our field trip to the Art Institute of Chicago, 4th graders viewed the original icon painting by Grant Wood. They learned about the historical and spiritual themes in this important piece of work. We are now learning how to use a grid and the concepts of placement and proportion to replicate a drawing of the painting. We also had some fun putting ourselves into the painting. The 4th grade students have been exploring the wonderful and wide world of color. We reviewed basics like Primary and Secondary colors but also added the Intermediate colors which are colors like red-orange and yellow-green. We also worked with tints and shades of color. A tint is made by adding white to a color and a shade is made by adding black to a color. The color mixing rule.."always start with the lightest color first" helped us to mix up some cool colors for our Kandinsky Concentric Circle paintings. The 4th graders will venture to downtown Chicago this month to tour the Chicago Art Institute. They are participating in a docent-led tour showcasing the Impressionist and Post-Impressionist artists Claude Monet, Renoir and Vincent van Gogh. "Stories in Art" is the title of the tour that will teach students to be an "art detective" and decipher what a painting is trying to communicate to them.
The 4th graders have begun their unit on clay and are creating vessels made from coils. We learned about the Native American artist Maria Martinez and how she and her family created the black pots of San Ildefonso Pueblo region in New Mexico. We also looked at the vessel pots made by the ancient Egyptians and Greeks. Students are creating a vessel that will be used to carry something . Students have been so engaged as the art room has become their personal studio. They are exploring and manipulating materials to use in their Self-Idenity Collage boards. They are working to create focal point in their work so that the viewer will be drawn into their artwork. The fourth graders are beginning to explore their own creative and artistic abilities. The current unit of study challenges them to reflect on their own identity and use images to convey that identity to their classmates. We looked at the child prodigy artist Alexandra Nechita and learned about her sources of inspiration. We then listed our sources of inspiration and students are currently brainstorming ideas and rendering "thumbnail" sketches in their sketchbooks. These sketches will be used as they assemble their Self-Idenity Collage piece. The art room will become "their studio" and they will work with mixed mediums to create this piece. Their "passions" are driving their imaginations and needless to say they are very excited to create these....stayed tuned!
