Our clay unit has begun and students will be creating a clay penguin. We are currently drawing penguins with ebony drawing pencils and looking at the geometric shapes that are combined to draw a penguin. Students have also been introduced to a value scale and are using shading to create a three-dimensional illusion. We will use those same geometric shapes to form our clay penguin. Students are always fascinated by the medium of clay and their penguins will be adorable...stay tuned!

The second graders have been exploring the world of warm and cool colors. Using watercolor paints and oil pastels they have created two paintings that will be woven together into a paper weaving. We are also learning how to tie a "slip knot" to create fringe on the edges of our weavings. Second graders have been learning how to "paint like Monet." We used a mono-print technique to lay down the larger areas of our water pond. Then the students used oil pastels to show sunlight and shadows in their waterscapes. They are just wonderful! Second graders have entered the lovely world of Impressionism! We learned about all of the artists of this movement and discovered that they were interested in "capturing" a moment in time. Claude Monet's Japanese Footbridge will be our inspiration for our next painting. Check back in the coming weeks to view our progress!
The clay unit is always a favorite for every student. This year the second graders are learning to mold and shape the clay into various forms. After studying and drawing all sorts of various penguins in our "mini sketchbooks" we are now making penguins using clay. Our class quilts are finally completed! And just in time for these super cold winter days! These "crazy" quilts were designed using warm and cool color families. Students also learned three "stitches" used in sewing...the running stitch, the whip stitch and the cross stitch. They also had a blast working as a team to piece them together. Second graders are learning about the world of Fiber Art. We are creating a "Crazy Quilt" using warm and cool color families. The Quiltmakers Gift, a fable the celebrates the joy of giving was integrated into this unit. The artist Vincent van Gogh has been the inspiration for the second graders Sunflower Still Life paintings. We began with close observation and practice drawings of the sunflower. Students were amazed at all the details they could include. Using thick paint and quick strokes, they have enjoyed painting in the style of Expressionism! |
